Find and Replace Meets Proofreading

A funny thing happened as I was editing my memoir’s final draft. I decided to disguise a few names and places in my book and used the ‘find and replace’ tool in google docs. My kids went to the Columbus Magnet School, but to protect a few identities, I changed it to SoNo Magnet. Anywhere the proper noun COLUMBUS showed up, I instructed the document to replace it with SoNo Magnet instead.

Imagine my surprise when I got to the part about where I was born, and instead of Columbus, Ohio, it showed me born in SoNo Magnet, Ohio.

    Never use “Replace All”

    Always use “Find Next”
