In 4th grade the art teacher, Miss Broderick, invited me out of my homeroom to help paint a mural for the school. My talent was recognized early, and I blossomed whenever I had art materials in hand.
In my early 20’s I learned the art of pysanky – batik eggs – and started a successful business, An Egg by Jane, that included an invitation to decorate eggs for the White House, a commission by Steve Jobs, and appearances on the Today Show. Since closing that company in the early 2000’s, I’ve focused on coaching, retreats and speaking until just before the pandemic of 2020.
On March 14th I learned a brand new (to me) craft – Penny Rugs – the weekend before the quarantine began. Since then, I have been designing, cutting and stitching pillows, beanbags (for my grandsons!) and wall-hangings for myself and my family.
Now I want to share my creations with you! I am offering to create two commissions per month and invite you to get in touch to reserve yours for 2020.
Details and Close-ups
Each pillow and wall-hanging consists of multiple ‘pennies’ which are cut from felted wool and hand-stitched with pearl cotton onto a 100% wool background.
The craft grew out of women’s creativity and limited materials. The simple forms and infinite variety achievable using this technique has me enthralled.
A GIFT FOR YOU
