What Ruth Bader Ginsburg and I Have in Common

I sat in awe of our great Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, throughout the documentary film RBG which I highly recommend. Her ongoing fight for equality in our country is formidable, and she’s had enormous success winning five of six discrimination cases she argued before the Court.

She had a marriage of over 50 years and helped raise two (now adult) children who are featured in the film along with her grandchildren. One granddaughter, also an attorney, appears frequently in the movie with her grandmother and also talking about her.

Justice Ginsburg’s work ethic is unparalleled, often toiling till 4 or 5 in the morning, getting two hours of sleep, then starting a new day. Her daughter, Jane, said she sleeps all weekend. She’s not permitted in the kitchen, loves opera, and has a huge fan base. “I’m hoping to get even a glimpse of her,” one young woman on line to hear her speak stated.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the entire movie, there were more than a few moments that stood out. When former President Bill Clinton talked about her, saying he had barely considered her for a seat on the Court because of her advanced age, when the opportunity arose for an appointment, after being convinced to at least give her an interview, he said that within 15 minutes he knew he would select her.

RBG described why the judicial robes were designed the way they were, allowing a man’s necktie room at the collar line. She has created her own particular look, with the help of devoted fans, rocking a variety of crocheted, jeweled and beaded collars which in between cases are in her closet on individual hangers. She chooses from the collection each time she has a decision to hand down with one particular style now recognized as her dissenting collar.

But the moment that completely warmed my heart was when she was with her trainer doing her twice-weekly workout. After googling to find an image to share with you, I discovered that her private trainer has brilliantly capitalized on this unique relationship by calling his business Body Justice. During her workout she does a plank and push-ups with a basketball to bounce off of (vs. the mat). My wonderful trainer, Kelechi, has me doing planks which he has explained are the best way to improve my issues with balance. “It’s all in the core,” he instructs. After watching Mme. Justice go through her workout, I’m doubly inspired to keep up with mine.

At 85, her mind is still incredibly sharp, she can lift weights and stay awake and alert to serve our country. The least I can do is follow her example in my own corner of the world.
