No, I’m Not Concerned About Andrew Rannells’ Memoir

This week, actor and entertainer Andrew Rannells’ memoir launched. Its title is Too Much Is Not Enough: A Memoir of Fumbling Toward Adulthood. If that sounds somewhat familiar, it’s because the title of my memoir is Too Much OF Not Enough.

The difference between IS and OF tells the story. Here’s a man who has experienced so much and wants more. I’m a woman who survived on crumbs at a banquet table and learned to no longer attend unfulfilling feasts.

One of my favorite slogans is “Don’t go to the hardware store for oranges.”

I haven’t read Rannells’ book yet, but will. It was excerpted in Modern Love recently, and I enjoyed what I read. But we are worlds apart.

My younger daughter cued me into his upcoming book months ago when it was first announced, shortly after my own title had been decided. “Are you worried, Mom?” she inquired. Funnily enough, in an earlier iteration of my title, I’d chosen “I’m Fine: A Memoir” which turned out to be similar to Whitney Cummings’ memoir, “I’m Fine and Other Lies.” At that time, I was concerned and went through several more iterations.

If you enter any title you make up in the amazon search bar, several different volumes show up. BTW, there are currently three other books with Rannells’ exact title. Where once I was overly concerned about the uniqueness of my title, I’ve come to understand that it’s a big publishing world out there and that the name of your book–which you want to be memorable–isn’t nearly as important as the quality of your writing, story and marketing efforts.

I will be pleased if my memoir gets found along with Rannells’. I’d be in good company, and so would he.

I love how you shared about this, straight forward and embarrassing it. I absolutely agree with you about a world of difference between the words is and of… I think you explained that beautifully.
